BAFFEST 2009, Creative City Movement : Workshop at South Braga

Museums are not warehouses. Museums is simply not a place to store objects, but also a place that contains memories and stories. The KAA museum has a high historical value, also a strategically location. It’s a shame that until this very moment, the KAA museum hasn’t been managed well. Be it the unkempt building, dirty toilets, and the lack of sign systems inside the museum.

That night, in the “Creative City Movement : Workshop at South Braga” the ITB architecture students sat in a room, listening to Mr. Isman, as head of the KAA museum, and Mr. Achmad Tardiana (Pak Apep), as Head of the Architecture Study Program speak.

Besides the revitalizing of the KAA museum, they also plan to create a friendly environment for pedestrians. The areas they plan to develop includes the Gedung PD Jasa & Kepariwisataan, Gedung Merdeka, Gedung Asia Afrika, and other buildings in the south part of Braga.

In his presentation, Pak Apep talked about “changing the old city square area into a new destination”. If this program succeeds, it’s going to be interesting  to see people once again turning alun-alun as the main destination to shop or simply walk about on weekends.

On rearranging the public space, Pak Apep explained, that besides being friendly to the pedestrians, the place must reflect on the city’s characteristics.

A couple of areas abroad that is being used as study comparatives, are Xin Tian Di (Shanghai), Quncy Market (Boston), The Rocks (Sydney), and Lan Kwai Fong (HongKong).

We hope that this program will go smoothly because I bet we all can’t wait to enjoy Bandung in a comfortable open space.
