Bandung Has Affairs!

We love Bandung but Bandung loves affairs“, a yellow tagline with a black background.

The color used to write this text is very contrast and striking but when read, an ambiguous meaning is found instead, implying a parody, contradicting its color. It could be—for Indonesia’s popular culture—that the tagline is implying on the meaning of ‘cheating’, as if in the context, “the one we love turns out to be a cheater..” . The real meaning could be hard to catch at first glance because of this reasoning. Let’s try to understand the real meaning of this tagline, because by doing this, we might be able to understand the relevance on the concept of Bandung Affairs.

Bandung Affairs is a realization from Kukuh Rizal Arfianto’s idea, a Ceramic Craft student from ITB Fine Arts and Design, 2006. This idea was introduced to the public in the WorkPOD Coworking Space event. It’s hard to specifically categorize Bandung Affairs, because Bandung Affairs isn’t a form of community or a movement. It can be realized as a form of abstract, a possibility that continues its search of a form. This statement was mentioned in Bandung Affairs presentation called Bandung Has Affairs! Web Launching, which is part of the Helarfest 2009 chain of events.

In that presentation, Kukuh presented an argumentation on the condition of Bandung’s society. One of the main complaint is about the ‘stuck’ position in the social condition. A dead end, as if effortless, a common condition felt amidst the daily urban space routinity.

To remind us of Bandung Affairs tagline that uses the word ‘we’, Kukuh applied it in his presentation, using the word ‘we’ as the substitute for the first person mentioning. Deliberately or not, this is probably what Kukuh aims to project about Bandung Affairs. Anyone who hears, sees, and talks about Bandung Affairs, is a Bandung Affairs member. This is the element that forms Bandung Affairs, as seen in its website www.bandungaffairs.com. In it are lots of people who are invited to contribute photos, poetries, diary entries, or just about anything. This is a summarization as a form of wanting to share discussions, inviting peopleto use the word ‘we’ instead of ‘our’ that is usually identified with the idea of “segmentation”.

This ‘us’-ness has created a unlimited space, resolving in Bandung Affairs creating bits of knowledge disciplines. These bits are ‘us’ who are talking to eadh other.

The majority of Bandung Affairs founders are students from the Fine Arts, so it’s no surprise that the main points are shown through visual culture forms. In order to expand this issue, Bandung Affairs has created a division that aims to focus on visual culture called Basement (Bandung Affairs Street Art Movement). In this division, Bandung Affairs has specifically created a guerrilla movement to create visual forms on the streets of Bandung, and play with the possibilities that can be formed from an image projection form.

Because the city is the ‘meeting point’ where all problems dwell, and that becomes our ‘playground’..” was mention by Kukuh. These words are the main point that can define Bandung Affairs abstraction. The city, sociaty, trends, and the building elements activities are the usual things people living in urban spaces go through daily. This is what Bandung Affairs then turn into their playground. As all playgrounds are, they then treated the urban problems as something fun. But being fun doesn’t mean reducing the critical level, the theme discussed is still sharp, but in a more relaxed, cool and imaginative context. Maybe that’s the ‘today’ strategy, a strategy that’s placed in the midst of the urban social space, where urban spaces in Bandung is filled with all kinds of commotions that always seems to be busy and in a hurrry. But then ‘we’ come in, and ‘we’ are the people who want and will keep talking about it.

We Love Bandung, but Bandung Loves Affairs“.
