FESTIVAL ORIGAMI 2009

”Folding left, folding right! Hooray! It’s done!” Maya Hirai, leading on the participants to cheer loudly in between the FESTIVAL ORIGAMI 2009 workshop.

I though that I’d be stuck to only being able to make paper boats for the rest of my life. Luckly, Maya Hirai has once again held an origami workshop the other day at Cisitu – Bandung. What did learn from the experience?

The workshop program was divided into 3 sessions. For the opening, we had an introduction for basic origami. Wow, who knew that we can make a baloon out of paper!

Fold-fold-fold, blow, and tadaa~! In this session the participants is taught to make drinking glasses, baloons, flowers, leaves, and of course, the world-known origami icon : the origami bird!

Kirigami – the art of cutting paper – is introduced a bit in this session, ”Kirigami is like magic”, said Maya Hirai. ”We don’t know what it looks like when cutting, but when finally opened, the result is amazing!”

The next session is about the introduction of various contemporary origami, which is more complex then the ones before but still attracts curiosity from the participants. My personal favorite is the Twist technique, a technique that doesn’t compose a 3-D from, but rather creating textures on the paper, giving it a plaited illusion.

At the end of the program was the awaited session: Origami Contest! Out of all the participants, 10 were chosen as the fastest in making the baloon origami, and was then competed againts each other to grab the 3 winning positions. I was aiming for the prize, which was Maya Hirai’s book, ”Populer Origami” and a cash prize, but unfortunately I didn’t win.

As predicted, I was totally addicted, and on the way home I was folding away making a bunch of Twist techniques!

A bit about Maya Hirai :

Amongst the Indonesian origami lovers, the name Maya Hirai (Fajar Ismayanti) is well known. It’s actually no surprise, her being the Directure of Sanggar Origami Indonesia (SOI), has already achieved a qualified licence as an origami instructor, straight from the Nippon Origami Association (NOA)!
