Dago Plaza, Monday night, November 9, 2009. That night wasn’t only filled with the usual youth hanging out, drinking and stuff, but there was another source of crowd coming from the Bandung Public Furniture (BPF), part of the Helarfest 2009 event, has officially been opened. The opening ceremony was attended by Mr. Ridwan Kamil, president of Helarfest, and a representation from the Dinas Pariwisata dan Kebudayaan Jawa Barat (West Java Culture and Tourism Official). The event was heated up by live performances from LOUD and Tabrak Lari Blues.
BPF itself is a venue for designers to design public furnitures that are then put on display, hoping to create a fresh style in public furniture design that hasn’t got much attention yet. Based on the title and concept, these designs are then displayed to the public to be used as a public utility.
In this event, the majority of designers participating made sitting facilities. These seats are arranged and displayed in such a way, creating a comfortable atmosphere for the users in doing various kinds of interaction. For instance, Meicy Sitorus, a Product Design alumni from FSRD ITB, made a seat from a combination of rubber tire waste and nets. Visually it looks really simple, but the seat itself is very comfortable and efective as an outdoor public furniture.
The most eyecatching creation is a design by Raditya Ardiyanto Tepur. He has created a playing facility, engklek (hopscotch). The visitor of Dago Plaza can be seen playing, hopping from square to square. Interestingly enough, the engklek was used as the official symbol for the event, that was then hopped on by the representation from the Dinas Pariwisata dan Kebudayaan Jawa Barat.
This event will be held until December 4, moving from place to place such as Cihampelas Walk and Paris Van Java. On November 28, BPF will collaborate with a fashion show from Kriya Textile, FSRD ITB. The closing ceremony will be held at Galeri Soemardja, ITB.
