Penca on the Street is one of the events included in the Helar Festival 2009. Held on Saturday, October 24, 2009 at Taman Cikapayang, Jl. Ir. Juanda (Dago), that’s usually crowded on a Saturday Night, has succeeded in gaining a large mass of onlookers that were mostly interested in the Sundanese traditional arts itself, or just happened to be passerbys who took interest while walking on the “Jalan Dago”. The event started around 19.30 pm with Edi Brokoli as the MC, using Sundanese language all the while.
The main attraction of the event – as the theme suggests—is the Gendang Penca, a traditional artistic performance that combines the art of martial arts and music, performed by the Pencak Silat Panglipur Tunas Jaya. It begins with the children performers, saluting the audience, with their hands ditangkupkan in front of their chest and a nod of the head. The performers then started their act, by showing off their pencak silat skills, with fluid movements in sync with the drumming of the instruments, and was ended once again by another saluting gesture to the audience.
Besides the Penca, there is another performance that’s interesting, which is a performance of the intrument karinding played by the Karinding Attack group, accompanied by gendang percussions Karinding is a traditional music instrument, made with a bamboo stick with a hole in the middle, played by blowing and tapping the end of the instrument, producing a unique sound. Edi Brokoli, Man Jasad, and others joined in this well anticipated performances.
Penca on the Street went on with excitement and was far from boring. The MC was very communicatif with the audience, and held some quizzes with prizes for the audience, one of it included translating Indonesian language texts into refined Sundanese, a feat that turned out to be hard even for Sundanese people themselves. This event was interesting, in terms of preserving traditional culture that’s nearly forgotton these days and pushed aside by the ever growing modern culture.
