Re-inventing Bandung : Design Sharing

Surrounded by the ever-changing weather in the Bandung these days, guiding this two-wheeled transportation to stop by at a strategic and comfortable place to take cover from the heat and rain out there. Enter deeper, and you’ll find a not so big room filled architects, old and young, that are in the middle of sharing fresh ideas about the development of some areas of the city.

The door is opened a bit for old ideas, please wait outside!

Part of the BAFFEST 2009 event, Re-Inventing Bandung is in its enthusiastic second year for new ideas to rediscover and give meaning to the city from the design scope of the area and the architecture involved in it. This event will be ended with an exhibition at the Paris van Java Mall (28 November – 4 December), Galeri Arsitektur ITB (5-7 December), and Selasar Sunaryo (8-11 December).

As the title suggests above, where idea-swapping really do exist between the seniors-juniors, where an architect must be able to position themselves as a citizen of the city with daily experiences that are often very personal when interacting with a certain area.

The 4 presenters this time are PASAGI, Tim Lima (Unpar), Arsitekturina-Tim ITENAS, dan Tim ITB.

The first presenter is a representation  from PASAGI that has observed the phenomenal changing of the original function of land use in the Dago area that’s  aiming for a more commercialized purpose, an inevitable feat, but can be limited. This team suggests that the tampering of Dago only is enough, and to not include other roads around them to prevent creating new problems.

Next, the Tim Lima from Unpar tried to experiment with the Alun-Alun area of Bandung. This area is known for it’s wide range of activities being held, with equally historical value attached to this area, between official reatail – kaki lima (sidewalk food vendors)- Masjid Agung with it’s ‘fenomena solat Jumat’ (the Friday prayers phenomenal condition).

It’s a shame that we would have to wait for what they’re planning to do at the future exhibition, because they’ve only just discussed the main problem of Bandung’s Alun-Alun.

The Arsitekturina this time has explored the Cihampelas area with optimist suggestions such as applying vertical parking spaces, changing the road functions into green open spaces, equal to 84 basketball courts,  and a car traveler as an automatic ‘valet parking’ machine to achieve zero carbon emission in the Cihampelas area. Still exploring the Cihampelas area, now the team from ITENAS is trying to offer solutions for smooth transportation circulation with a differentiation on the path levels for transportation and pedestrian space, and to apply the method in certain areas.

Lastly we have the team from ITB who discovered a parking space from a mall in the Jalan Sukajadi area, as the beginning step for the area development, especially on the traffic problems.

According to Rizqi Khairul Fuady, Head of the Re-Inventing Bandung event, by the end of the year, results of the exhibition are going to be compiled into a book that will be distributed to libraries around and will be handed symbolically to the Government of Bandung. In effort to introduce architecture to the community, the best design from the participants will be decided from the visitors  choice on the day of the exhibition.

Whatever happens, let these architects go on to re-build this city!
