Youth Waste : Ground Zero Exhibition

These days our generation of youth are rich with ideas and creative thoughts, but on the contrary, they also produce a large amount of waste because of their equally large consumption of objects. Inspired from this problem, a group of young designers then decided to run a campaign on this global issue by creating products out of trash.

On the 28 and 29 of November 2009, more then 30 young designers, still active students form Institute Technology of Bandung and Pelita Harapan University of Jakarta contributed ideas for the Youth Waste event that organized by INDDES ITB, designing house good products out of waste such as glass, paper, plastic bottles, electronic parts, etc.

All the products displayed has successfully attract the visitors attention. Such as the Recyclamp by Aulia Amanda and Annisa Fardan Nabila. By throwing out the broken filament, cleaning the insides of the bulb and finally utilizing the bulbs glass as spice containers. There’s also the Saw it Dust by Ivan Christianto. After observing the amount of wooden container waste scattered around Jakarta, Ivan then tried to explore the full potential of the material, resulting in designing a stool out of wooden modular (composing of the used containers) that are stacked and bind together with wooden glue and topping it with a hand-sewn seating pillow.

Besides exhibiting products, Youth Waste has also held a talk show, featuring guest speakers such as Dwinita Larasati (academic, sustainable design expert), Ridwan Kamil (architect), Yusing (green design activist), Sano (environmental activist), and Shana Fatina Sukarsono. The discussion was about how it’s impossible for trash to disappear in a short amount of time, and how we can help by reusing and reducing it. The Up cycle and Down cycle that’s been talked about these days was the main attraction of the speakers. The conclusion was that design is the only solution to this problem, being that design is the symbol of civilization. Besides this session, Yusing also showcased pictures of his house that utilizes wooden waste as his wall mosaic.

What started as a small talk, then evolved as a breakthrough youth movement from our generation. Such an interesting feat to be held annually.
